GYENESDIÁS VILLAGE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY

    INTRODUCTION

    Gyenesdiás is situated in the Western-Hungarian region only 100 kilometres away from the western border of Hungary, in the vicinity of Lake Balaton, at the foot of the Keszthely Hills, on an area of 18,5 square kilometres. 3.500 inhabitants reaching a number of 20.000 in the high-season. The town of Keszthely, the cultural centre of the region known
    for its fascinating Festetics Palace, and Hévíz with its world famous spa is only 6 kilometres away and only 15 kilometers from the international airport of Sármellék.
    The life of Gyenesdiás is primarily determined by tourism, which can be thanked to the Balaton, Keszthely Hills, nature of environment, excursion opportunities, well built tourism infrastructure and the hospitality of the local community.

    MODERNIZATION

    The village is working on a sustainable development, spending on tangible and intangible goods. Created all the necessary economic, commercial and touristic development opportunities, while it never forgot about the idea of a living village. Beside all these projects we have a well-working institute network that is planned to be completed with a library and assembly hall, and a sporthall. We are also modernazing the energetical consumption of public institutions and we are searching for such alternative solutions that can be economically operated in along term.

    SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS

    The NGOs in Gyenesdiás help to make the cultural, sport, and other parts of life more active. The TDM system based Touristic Association in Gyenesdiás was the first one in Hungary, which responsibily guides the local tourism, but other NGOs are doing also a great work, taking part in the development of the village. The public services around the built up parts of the village are almost complete. Drainage, water, electricity, gas are everywhere available, and measures are taken in the diversion of rainwater. The coverage of cable TV and telephone is 100% and field intensity is ensured everywhere.

    PRIVATE CAPITAL AND COMMON MICRO-REGION INVESTMENTS: DARNAY (DORNYAI) CELLAR

    National monument, listed cellar with wooden frame. This cellar from the 17th centur y is a genuine and typical piece of folk architecture. The date on its crossbeam reads: 1644. (The oldest cellar with wood frame in the Balaton Upland, or even the Carpatian Basin) Until fireboting (collecting wood in the forest) was allowed, cellars had been built of beams cut from thick oak-wood. Unfortunately, only a few cellars of this type were preser ved to posterity. At present the building is a national monument privately owned.
    The primar y aim of the Monument Authority and the local goverment to buy it back from private property, and to sustain it with the collaboration of civil groups.
    • The cellar area can be used to introduce wine growing, winer y and regional winemuseum (plans are dated back to 1936!).
    • The ground could be used as a small skanzen by buliding further houses typical of the region. The area can be developed and it is accessible 20 % of the lot can be built up, with a max. height of 5,5 m („Lke-1” building zone).

    • Industrial area: Near the main street, well accessible (end of the Faludi street). The ground is partly supplied with public ser vices and developments are in progress.     Besides the recultivation of related unused mines, the planned road utilization takes advantage of the evolved lie of the land.

    PRIVATE CAPITAL AND COMMON MICRO-REGION INVESTMENTS: NAGYMEZŐ VISITOR CENTER – NATURE PARK

    „Nagymező” is situated at the meeting point of several tour routes in the area of Keszthely-Hills; it is a well known and beloved beauty spot in the
    forest among the resident population and nature-lovers. Thens of thousands of people visit the place yearly; however their demand can not be satisfied, because there are not enough facilities.
    The visitor center could ser ve all these people properly way, with required facilities:
    social, cultural as well as accomodation:
    • open-air school
    • monitoring house
    • office and accomodation
    • beside eco-restaurant
    • social locality (stage and water supply)
    • development of a fixed control park
    • research and exhibition opportunities (environmental protection, science of forestry).
    A further aim is to facilitate the environmentalyaware lifestyle by strengthening environmental protection. These opportunities will be open for regional level events and for arrangement of other occupations. Summer programs, open-air school, occupations, exchange-holidays will all strengthen the economic cooperation of villages.
